Do you know your ward well enough to vote in Toronto’s municipal election this fall?

If not, no worries — we’re here to catch you up before voting day is here.

Toronto’s municipal election is coming up on Oct. 26, with advance voting open between Oct. 6 and 11. We’re here to help you stay informed on what’s happening in your neighbourhood before you cast your ballot for mayor, city councillor and school board trustee.

Here are the basics that you need to know about Ward 5 York South-Weston.

Ward 5’s rough boundaries are north of Highway 401, west of the Humber River, east of the Canadian National Railway line near Caledonia Road, and south of the Canadian Pacific Railway and GO Transit rail lines near Dundas Street West and St. Clair Avenue West.

So, if you live within these boundaries, you’ll vote in Ward 5 during the municipal election this October.

This encompasses the neighbourhoods of Weston, Mount Dennis, Rockcliffe-Smythe, Brookhaven-Amesbury, Keelesdale-Eglinton West and Pelmo Park-Humberlea.

According to the most recent Canadian census, York South-Weston’s population is approximately 115,675, with 41.3% of residents aged 20 to 49.

50.3% of residents are immigrants — primarily of Portuguese, Filipino, Jamaican, Italian and Vietnamese origin — and the median annual income is $12k less than Toronto’s average, at $72,000, with 16.4% of residents classified as low-income — 2% higher than Toronto’s average of those with an average annual household income of under $30,000.

Most homes in this ward are single detached houses and apartment buildings over five storeys. 52% of residents are renters versus 48% are homeowners; this is the opposite of Toronto’s average of renters-to-homeowners.
