With the cost of living for Torontonians rising every year, it can feel impossible to even find affordable ingredients to cook with.
In our series The Checkout, we highlight grocery stores that don’t make buying ingredients and food feel like putting a downpayment on a house.
This week, we’re heading to the West End for affordable, fresh produce at the Bloor Fruit Market on 662 Bloor St. W. in Koreatown. This grocery store has been a staple in theKoreatown neighborhood for 30 years, offering fruit and vegetables grown in-province and cheap alternatives to big grocery stores.
Open between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. every day, Bloor Fruit Market’s stock changes from week-to-week, but always includes affordable options when it comes to making healthy choices.
It offers a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, with in-season favourites like summer peaches and corn coming from growers in the area. Eggs, dried goods and flowers are also available inside the store, as well as house plants for any green thumbs out there.
With fall just around the corner, oranges are one great option for getting vitamin D in your system. On my visit, I found bags of clementines for $2.99 per pound. Cara cara oranges, a sweet variety that are my personal favourite, were two for $2.
Peppers are a great option to stock up on vitamin C and fiber. At the fruit market, red and green peppers cost $2.49 per pound, and yellow and orange peppers cost $1.99 per pound.
To get to Bloor Fruit Market, take Line 2 to either Christie or Bathurst stations and walk until you’re at the corner of Bloor Street and Manning Avenue. When you see a bright red building with a yellow sign hanging above it, you’ve reached the right place.
