So, here are some alternatives for those who can’t access that BMV location.
Now, first things first, you’re not gonna find a thrift bookstore as big as BMV’s Annex location. However, there are still some great ones around the city worth checking out for their great prices, cool finds and out-of-print treasures.
ABC BOOKS
By Wellesley station on Yonge Street is ABC Books, which offers a nice selection of books, DVDs and CDs. You can even grab some books for under a dollar, if you’re lucky.
However, Faith from Chez Moi Books shared under our Instagram post that some of ABC Books’ rows are too narrow for wheelchair users.
SELLERS & NEWEL
Out west in Little Italy is Sellers & Newel, a penchant for books on music, spirituality, and “weird” fiction and boasts about its built-in ramp. They’re one of the few second-hand bookshops in the city that offer some of their rarities online, so you can browse the shop’s website for an idea of prices and books in stock. Don’t let the prices there fool you; there are plenty of affordable picks, just steps away from the 506 streetcar.
ZOINKS
Zoinks is bookended by Ossington and Dufferin stations and is the perfect spot for the literature and music nerds in your life. Whether you’re looking for a nice record to add to your collection or looking for a gift for your most well-read friend, Zoinks has a great catalogue if you’re down to flick through its bargain bins.
Please note there’s a small curb and metal lip at the bottom of the door frame that may cause some issues, so keep that in mind before visiting.
CIRCUS BOOKS
For those in the East End looking for an accessible used bookstore, look no further than Circus Books. Whether you’re looking for a niche new book, an old YA classic, or a new DVD to add to your collection, this is the spot to hit.
Good luck, thrifter! And make sure to do a second round while second-hand shopping. I was looking through Circus’ CD collection when I found a dinged-up copy of my favourite Outkast album. I could feel the hinges were just one TTC-ride away from breaking, and I wasn’t going to take that chance.
Thankfully, I looked through that same section later and found a nearly spotless copy priced lower than the first. If the thrift gods can look down on me, they can for you, too!
