Have you ever spent a day out and about in Toronto and given a stranger their flowers for being a total “green flag?”
Maybe it’s just me. But whenever I’m out and someone does something so right, I can’t help but think that they know ball.
We should all aspire to be this good. So, here’s a list of Toronto green flags that you should implement in your day-to-day behaviour.
- Standing on the right side of the escalator to let people who need to move fast on the left.
- Letting people with disabilities, older adults and people with children onto the subway first. Check out The Green Line’s’s Editor-in-Chief Anita Li’s hot take on Toronto accessibility as a mother.
- Similarly to number two, giving up your seat to let those with disabilities, older adults and people with children sit on the TTC.
- Meeting someone who lives on the opposite side of the city halfway instead of forcing your date to go all the way to the East End or West End.
- Merging onto the Gardiner without making it everyone else’s problem.
- Actually tapping on the TTC.
- Not blocking the PRESTO reader on the streetcar — no matter how busy it is.
- Not taking up the entire freaking sidewalk at Yonge Street, forcing others to walk on the street to pass you.
- Shouting out local businesses as your favourite spot in the city (I like Darvish Restaurant, which serves authentic Persian food.)
- Not cheating the red light by swerving right and almost hitting pedestrians — that’s especially true for delivery drivers on motorcycles.
- Actually freaking moving to the middle of the subway car instead of gathering at the doors and inevitably stopping the flow of traffic. (I hate you people).
- Taking off your freaking backpack on public transit instead of hitting people with it the whole freaking time. (I also hate you).
- Walking your friends home so they don’t have to walk through King Street West or College around Bathurst and Ossington, stumbling past a bunch of drunk 20-year-olds.
- Not joking that Scarborough isn’t part of Toronto.
- Taking your friends to Mimico for a waterfront date rather than saying everything good is downtown.
