So you claim Toronto, blast Drake and know a bit of local slang, but you’re actually from Mississauga, eh?
There are a ton of posers in the city, and it can get kinda hard to figure out who’s an OG and who’s faking it.
So, we’ve rounded up some ways to figure out if that person you just met on a night out is actually from Toronto or not.
You are NOT a true Torontonian if:
- You think a 45-minute commute or an hour walk is bad.
- You don’t own at least one canvas tote from Jimmy’s, Pilot, Toronto Public Library, Boxcar or TIFF.
- You think Kensington is the only artsy spot in the city.
- You don’t have an Olivia Chow meet-cute story at some community event or cultural festival.
- You don’t have at least one friend that met their significant other at a run club.
- You’ve yet to befriend at least one barista at a niche coffee shop that closes too early.
- You wait to cross north or south at Yonge Street and Queen Street. (We’re not encouraging you to jaywalk.)
- You’ve yet to go to at least one performative male/masc/fem or CN Tower/celebrity look-alike contest.
- You think prime-time to go to Trinity Bellwoods is on the weekend.
- You don’t know that the Kyoto Sushi House lunch menu price is the best deal in the city.
- You debate whether the Skydome is actually the Skydome.
- You think “the spots” in Toronto are Trinity Bellwoods, King West and Ossington.
- You haven’t memorized the exits at main Subway stations.
- You haven’t become familiar with the unhoused people in your neighbourhood.
- You have a license at the age of 20, because why would you need a car?
- You don’t know the slang words from part one, two and three of our series.
- You don’t meet at least five UGC/content creators, run club enthusiasts and pilates instructors every day.
- You don’t hear “I graduated from UofT/OCAD/TMU” every time you go out.
- If you don’t know why people think Yorkville is so overrated.
- You haven’t outrun a streetcar on foot.
Sift through this Reddit thread and let me know if I’ve missed any at aia@thegreenline.to. And yes, before you hit me, I do live in the city.
