Almost a decade after my first move to Toronto, I can say I’ve lived all around the city.
From the edges of North York to the heart of Riverdale, I’ve had my fair share of tries to get situated in a new corner of the city.
So here are my three tips on getting to know your new neighbourhood.
Aside from the obvious, like hitting Nextdoor and Facebook groups, this is what I do to make a previously unknown to me corner of the city feel like home.

First things first, I might be biased because I love libraries, but I always need to know where my nearest TPL branch is.
How easy is it to get there? What’s the vibe? What are the best study spots?
The library for me is not just a spot to pick up books, but also a low-key print shop, study spot and warm/cool place to land during tumultuous weather. Regularly going to the library can give you a sense of the city’s locals, programming, and more. And if you’re lucky enough, there might be a couple of branches you can discover.
Tied in that is visiting the nearest community centre! Whether it’s to get involved in their regular recreation programs or just to charge your rapidly dying phone.
Last but not least, is to maximize your listmaking. Whether it’s on Google Maps or written in your notes app, I love to keep track of local grocery stores, cafes, restaurants and more that I want to check out.
