Are you a Toronto-based artist looking for a space to create?
Well, guess what? The Kensington Market Community Land Trust (KMCLT) is transforming a 4,000 sq. ft. basement at 302 Spadina Ave. into a place where people can have fun and express themselves.
It’s meant to be an affordable studio space to support local artists and creatives — but it’s also a place for anyone to hang out. It’ll have a shared kitchen and gathering space too. The KMCLT also lists that the space will have an elevator to make the basement accessible.
The KMCLT is a community-based organization that acquires and stewards land in and near Kensington. It removes property off the speculative market and often provides community spaces. It operates similarly to the Toronto Chinatown Land Trust, which you can read more about in our series published in July.
Tenants at the community arts hub will also be able to access micro-studios that they can book, on the fourth and fifth floors of the building. There’ll also be opportunities to showcase their work at the KMCLT’s Welcome Space at 88 Nassau St.
The space is expected to be ready in the fall, but rent prices haven’t been announced yet. The KMCLT put out a callout for artists and creatives to express interest in joining the space, with priority given to those connected to the Kensington Market and/or Chinatown communities.
