Why we want you to create a Green Line account

Since launching in 2022, The Green Line has focused on becoming the kind of outlet that understands the importance of both in-person connection and how to navigate our modern digital landscape.

Since launching in 2022, The Green Line has focused on becoming the kind of outlet that understands the importance of both in-person connection and how to navigate our modern digital landscape.

The Green Line’s mission has been to help Torontonians connect with each other, while navigating how big tech is impacting how news gets to people. That’s why we need to discuss some new, important updates with you.

To keep our work sustainable and secure, we need to connect with you directly. Our ask is simple: Take less than a minute to create a free account on our new website.

This account is the most important tool we have to protect our mission. By choosing to share your interests and neighbourhood with us, you’ll help us make editorial decisions based on voluntary community needs rather than algorithmic guesswork. It allows us to customize your site experience, design targeted local initiatives and host events tailored specifically to what our shared communities need.

Why your feed is filled with slop (and how we’re fixing that)

It’s harder than ever to know what to trust online. Every day, big tech companies tweak their algorithms behind closed doors, often pushing clickbait, sensationalism or unverified AI-generated content into your feeds just to keep you scrolling. At the same time, massive AI models are quietly vacuuming up the web, scraping personal data and compromising your digital privacy without your consent. It can feel like the internet isn’t being built to inform you anymore — it’s being built to exploit your attention and your data.

We refuse to participate in that ecosystem. That’s why The Green Line is completely changing how we measure our own success. In the past, digital newsrooms chased “reach” and “views,” metrics that have become meaningless now that AI bots can easily simulate human clicks.

Instead, we’ve shifted our focus entirely towards active users and genuine engagement time. We’re no longer designing for an anonymous algorithm; we’re designing tools and tracking stories specifically to protect, inform and serve real humans like you. To do that safely and effectively, we need a secure way to know who’s on the other side of the screen.

Our solution: Building on ‘first-party data’

We can’t talk about what we’ve built on our new site without explaining the why and the how.

The easiest way to summarize what we’re trying to achieve is that we want to make decisions based on first-party data. Simply put, for us at The Green Line, this just means information that you’re willing to give us directly.

One simple way to help us build a better experience for you is to self-identify by creating an account on our website. This allows us to establish a direct relationship with you, away from the preying eyes of big tech platforms and locked securely away from scraping bots.

Sharing your preferences puts you in the driver’s seat. By letting us know what you care about, we can customize your experience, make the site easier to navigate and offer flexible membership options, so our community-targeted efforts remain accessible. Most importantly, it helps our newsroom understand what your neighbourhood actually needs by enabling us to design local reporting, practical resources and community events that serve you and your neighbours.

While account creation is the most important thing we want you to do today, we also built a bunch of cool, new features on our site that this account will unlock for you.

What’s new on The Green Line

  • Easier event registration. We’re moving away from external ticketing tools to a completely seamless, mobile-first experience built directly into our website. If you’re logged into your new Green Line account, RSVPing for upcoming community events and third spaces activities like trivia and game nights now require minimal steps. Your unique digital ticket and secure QR code will be generated instantly, sent to your inbox and saved in your personal account dashboard for frictionless scanning at the door.
  • Topic following & author notifications. You shouldn’t have to fight a big tech corporate algorithm to find hyperlocal coverage that matters to you. By creating a free account, you can select and follow your specific neighbourhood and topics of interest. This allows our platform to bypass external noise and deliver personalized updates straight to you, helping you stay connected with relevant stories and local journalists you trust most.
  • Commenting. We read your comments across our social media platforms and they help inform our editorial decisions. But what if we told you that you could comment directly on our website? With a TGL account, you’ll be able to do this, and have light-hearted debates with other Green Liners about our shared community and problems you want to solve.
  • TGL membership perks. Account creation is your gateway to a much deeper relationship with our journalists. While a free account unlocks personalized content, you can support independent journalism by stepping into our premium membership tiers, “Bloor” and “Kipling.” Members unlock exclusive benefits, including access to contribute to our editorial process, free tickets for all community events and the ability to “gift” your friends free events and Green Line memberships.
  • Engaging vertical videos. Hyperlocal storytelling is an evolving, living medium that shouldn’t be confined to text. As part of our mobile-first commitment, we’re introducing highly optimized vertical videos for you on-the-go. These quick, interactive visual formats will bring neighbourhood highlights, local explainers and civic resources straight to your smartphone screen.
