Toronto’s municipal election is coming up on Oct. 26, with advance voting open between Oct. 6 and 11. So we’re here to help you stay informed on what’s happening in your neighbourhood before you cast your ballot for mayor, city councillor and school board trustee. 

Here are the basics that you need to know about Ward 17 Don Valley North.

Don Valley North is located south of Highway 401, between Leslie Street on the east and Yonge Street and Mount Pleasant Street on the west and roughly north of the DVP. It includes Hillcrest Village, Bayview Woods-Steeles, Bayview Village, Don Valley Village, Pleasant View and parts of Henry Farm.

According to the ward profile based on the 2021 Canadian census, Don Valley North’s population is approximately 112,590.

  • 44.4% of residents are between the ages of 20 and 49. 
  • 60.6% of residents are immigrants, primarily from China, Iran, India, Hong Kong and the Philippines.  

Don Valley North residents’ median annual household income is $84,000 — exactly matching the city average. 14% of residents in Don Valley North are classified as low-income, meaning they make less than $30,000 per year.

56% of homes are apartment buildings over five storeys and 19% are single-detached houses, with 43% of residents being renters and 57% being homeowners — which means the ward has more homeowners than the rest of the city, on average.

What’s on residents’ minds? Based on online groups, community newsletters and the local councillor’s survey, Torontonians in Don Valley North are concerned about traffic and construction, porch pirates, car theft, break-ins, pedestrian safety, potholes and multiplexes.

Some notable projects in the neighbourhood include the Peanut Streets Plan, which is part of Toronto’s Neighbourhood Streets Plan, where the City takes a holistic look at an area where there are pedestrian safety and traffic flow concerns to implement new infrastructure like pedestrian crossings, curb extensions, stop signs, bike lanes and more, the redevelopment of Bayview Village Mall, the redevelopment of a YMCA community on 567 Sheppard Ave. E., the Renew Sheppard East Secondary Plan and the addition of long-term beds to North York General Hospital.

Ward 17 candidates

Don Valley North is currently represented by Coun. Shelley Carroll, who was first elected to City Council in 2003. She is running for re-election this fall.

Challengers are Jeffery Adamson, Jethro Adir Kavod, Hassan Mubarak Noor Mohamed, Roy Samathanam, Hong Xiao and Sabrina Zuniga.
