Do you ever find yourself heading to your local polling station on election day, only to realize you don’t know that much about your own neighbourhood?

You’re not alone.

Toronto’s municipal election is coming up on Oct. 26, with advance voting open between Oct. 6 and 11 — so we’re here to help you stay informed on what’s happening in your neighbourhood before you cast your ballot for mayor, city councillor and school board trustee.

Read on for a short overview of Ward 9 Davenport.

Davenport is located in the southwest area of Toronto, south of Eglinton Avenue West, north of King Street West, and between Weston Road to the west and Ossington Avenue to the east. This ward generally encompasses the neighbourhoods of Little Portugal, Regal Heights, the Junction Triangle, Brockton Village, Fairbank Village, Bloorcourt, Bloordale and Dufferin Grove.

According to the 2021 Canadian census, Davenport’s population is approximately 104,730.

  • 36.9% of residents are between the ages of 20 and 49.
  • 39.7% of residents are immigrants, primarily of Portuguese, Italian and Philippine origin — slightly lower than Toronto’s total immigrant population of 46.6%.

Davenport residents’ median annual household income is similar to Toronto’s overall average, at $85,000, with 11% of people classified as low-income — those with an average annual household income of under $30,000.

Most homes in this ward are low-rise apartment buildings under five storeys, with only 14%  of dwellings being single detached houses. 48% of residents are renters versus 52% who are homeowners, matching Toronto’s average ratio of renters-to-homeowners exactly.

Davenport’s Local Issues

Some local issues that Davenport residents are concerned about include: accessible and reliable public transit, affordable housing, safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists and accessible green spaces, like the construction of the Davenport Diamond Greenway, a multi-use path connected to the future West Toronto Railpath Extension.

Recent local development projects are mostly related to public transit and pedestrian and cyclist safety. For example, the Bartlett-Havelock-Gladstone Cycling Connections features new bikeways and other road safety improvements on Bartlett Avenue, Havelock Street and Gladstone Avenue between Davenport Road to College Street. The Bloor-Landsdowne GO Station — part of Metrolinx’s Barrie Line GO Expansion — seeks to improve commuter flexibility for local residents. Located south of Bloor Street West and west of Lansdowne Avenue, the station will be a new stop on the Barrie GO line.

Ward 9 Issues

Davenport is currently represented by Coun. Alejandra Bravo, who was elected as councillor for Ward 9 in 2022 and is running for re-election this fall.

Ashley Jansen, Marco Martins and Neil Simon are also candidates for city councillor.
