Toronto’s municipal election is coming up on Oct. 26, with advance voting open between Oct. 6 and 11 — so we’re here to help you stay informed on what’s happening in your neighbourhood before you cast your ballot for mayor, city councillor and school board trustee.
Read on for a short overview of Ward 12 Toronto-St. Paul’s.
Toronto – St. Paul’s is located in midtown Toronto, south of Eglinton Avenue West, north of Dupont Street and between parts of Dufferin Street and Ossington Avenue to the west and Mount Pleasant Road to the east. This ward generally encompasses the neighbourhoods of South Eglinton-Davisville, Yonge St. – Clair, Humewood-Cedarvale, Wychwood, Casa Loma and parts of Little Jamaica.
According to the most recent Canadian census, Toronto-St. Paul’s population is approximately 114,095
- 34.8% of residents are between the ages of 20 and 49.
- 35.4% of residents are immigrants, primarily of Filippine, Indian and British origin — about 10% lower than Toronto’s total immigrant population of 46.6%.
Toronto-St. Paul’s median annual household income is similar to Toronto’s average, at $86,000, with 15.1% of residents classified as low income — those with an average annual household income of under $30,000.
Most homes in this ward are apartment buildings over five storeys. Toronto-St. Paul has a higher renters-to-homeowners ratio than the rest of Toronto with 61% of residents being renters versus 39% homeowners.
Toronto-St. Paul’s local issues
Some local issues that Toronto-St. Paul’s residents are concerned about include: affordable housing and tenant rights, increased pedestrian infrastructure, playground improvement projects, like Cedarvale park’s playground enhancement, safe and reliable TTC and the repercussions of the newly constructed Eglinton Crosstown Light-Rail Transit, which forced several businesses in Little Jamaica to close during 15 years of construction.
Local development projects are mostly related to pedestrian safety and traffic calming efforts. For example, the Improving Davisville Avenue project seeks to implement road safety improvements like raised medians and curb extensions between Yonge Street and Mount Pleasant Road. Similarly, the Oakwood Village Streets Plan aims to enforce a series of measures to improve traffic and pedestrian safety in the neighbourhood.
Ward 12 Candidates
Ward 12 is currently represented by Coun. Josh Matlow. A Toronto school board trustee from 2003 to 2010, Matlow was elected as Ward 12 councillor in 2010 and has won every municipal election after. He’s running for re-election.
David Cottrell, Jenny Kalimbet, Ahmed Kamal, Bob Murphy and Mina Nadimi are also candidates for city councillor.
