Have you been wanting to get more involved in the downtown Toronto community? Now’s your chance with The 519!
The 519 (519 Church St. E.) has been a vital organization to the Toronto community since the 1970s. It’s a member of the Association of Community Centres (AOCCs) network, “which consists of City-owned or City-managed facilities that are managed, operated and maintained by volunteer Boards of Management.”
It hosts community events like yoga, self-defence workshops, gossip sessions for the elderly and more. You’ve probably seen The 519’s iconic brick building on Church Street next to Barbara Hall Park.
Another big part of The 519 is education and training by offering sessions to organizations, speaking to classes and more. The 519 helps all ages from EarlyOn to senior drop-in events, health and justice services, recreation events and more.
And you can be a part of it!
According to The 519, “volunteers play a crucial role in supporting our diverse range of programs and events,” so whether you’re interested in community initiatives, showing off your unique skills or being involved logistically, there’s something for everyone.
To volunteer, you must be 18 or older and go through one of The 519’s training sessions. And you’re in luck because they have sessions on Saturday, Sept. 19, and Thursday, Sept. 24.
One of the best parts about being a volunteer is that there are no hour requirements. After you complete your training, you’ll receive opportunity emails about helping out at events, programs, and services and it’s up to you when you volunteer.
