Cleaning up the humber river with the local community

Are you in the mood for spring cleaning, but already decluttered your apartment Marie Kondo-style?

Well, Earth is calling you.

More specifically, the Humber River Pals — an organization, with a self-described mission of hosting, “regular ravine cleanups to reduce the amount of litter in our ravine system.”

Volunteers will have the chance to see the beauty and learn the history of the Humber River in the neighbourhood of Weston.

Come together to build community in nature on Saturday, April 25 when Humber River Pals hosts their “Clean Up & Keep It Rolling: Bike Care for a Cleaner Humber River.”

Not only will you take part in a park and ravine clean-up, but there will also be a drop-in bike care station.

The station pop-up held by Mark Cheels, owner of Cheels Wheels, will provide safety checks for brakes, tire pressure and chains, minor on-the-spot fixes, live demos and bike life tips.

The Humber River Pals project is supported by the City of Toronto through Live Green Toronto and the Neighbourhood Climate Action Grants program. Here’s everything you need to know:

• The clean up will be at Weston Lions Park, 135 Humber River Recreational Trail, on Saturday, April 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The clean-up does not require registration; it is a drop-in event.
• Cheels Wheels will not be offering major repairs or part replacements during the pop-up but you’ll learn how to keep your bike safe, habits to save money long-term as a cyclist and how bike care supports a low-carbon lifestyle.
• Humber River Pals provides all supplies required to participate in clean-up. However, they ask that if people have garden gloves, to bring them to reduce the use of single-use disposable gloves.
