This event roundup features walks through High Park, plant swaps, and Mayworks Festival programming.

They say April showers bring May flowers, but I can’t say I’ve seen much of the latter.

Thankfully, I am seeing some trees flowering and the grass coming back in full. I don’t feel fully defrosted, with our irregularly brisk start to May, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying all the city has to offer you this week.

ADMIRE NEW BLOSSOMS

Admire new blossoms: Join The Black Nerds for their second annual walk through cherry blossoms at High Park! Meet at Game Mania on May 9 at 1 p.m., to then walk as a group down High Park to enjoy the blooms at their peak.

PLANT SWAP AND EAT

Plant swap and eat: Pieces To Pathways, a peer-led support group for LGBTQ+ youth dealing with substance use, hosts a regular community meal. For their dinner on May 14, come with some plants to swap and chat with like-minded queer people.

EMBRACING WORKING PEOPLE AND THE ARTS

Embracing working people and the arts: Celebrate the effort and imagination of labourers with the community-based festival, Mayworks. This year marks their 41st anniversary, and they have countless events planned until June 2. From film screenings to book launches and discussions, all geared towards the local and international effort of working people. Learn about all they have planned for this month-long festival on their website.

LOW-STAKES FUN

Low-stakes fun: Looking to craft in the park, dance in High Park, or simply go for a communal walk? Then Happy Town has you covered. This group focuses on low-barrier ways to regularly connect and have fun in third spaces around the city, from the PATH to High Park. This month, the group have tons planned, from Zumba to ’00s hits on May 11 to an afternoon of crafts and music-making on May 9. Check out their Luma page for more details and to RSVP.
