4 events to uncover Toronto history and explore motherhood

Take some time to take a walk around the city, listen to some talented writers share their work by checking out this week’s events roundup.

WALK IT OUT

Walk it out: Looking to learn a little bit more about the city? Join Jane’s Walk, a free festival for community-led walking tours, from May 1 to 3. There are plenty of walks planned, from a tour of Portuguese bakeries and Chinatown signage to public art on the Danforth and the role of corsets in the 19th century. Check out their website for details on all the walks offered this weekend.

BLACK QUEER STORY NIGHT

Black queer story night: UNTOLD Stories is hosting a Black queer open mic night. Sign-ups are closed, but entry is free, so head over to Bampot House on May 3 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. to hear an array of Black queer and trans talent, with a DJ set to close the night. Tickets are PWYC at the door, so make sure to have cash ready.

SHARPEN YOUR DRAWING SKILLS

Sharpen your drawing skills: Brush up on your sketching by heading out to Sharpest Tool’s monthly life drawing session. From 7:30 to 10 p.m. on May 8, enjoy a self-guided life drawing class with a live model. Tickets are PWYC between $15 and $25. Keep in mind, Sharpest Tool is a COVID-19-conscious space, so mask up before heading over.

MUSING ON MOTHERS

Musings on mothers: Enjoy a night of readings themed around mothers and motherhood at Baa Baazaar on May 8 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. No need to pay for entry, just RSVP. All beer and wine purchases that night will be donated to Homeward Bound Toronto, a program that supports housing-insecure mothers to find stable careers.
