5 events this week to be crafty and sustainable in Toronto

Need an excuse to get out of the house, again?

Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. This week’s events include performance, zine-making, indie bookstore celebrations and more.

We may have some poor Toronto weather coming our way again, but don’t let that stop you from getting out there and having some fun.

CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET

Clean out your closet: Join fulCircle, a collective focused on sustainability, for their next community clothing swap event. Entry is free, just make sure to nab a ticket, bring some spare clothes, accessories, or fabrics. If you can, also spare a couple of dollars to support future programming. If you’re in a charm-making mood, they’ll be hosting a workshop the next day at Hanji Gifts for $33.

TACKLING FEAR

Tackling fear: The first in its series, Who’s Afraid is a monthly event where writers, poets, and performers explore the theme of fear. Spearheaded by writer, educator and curator Furqan Mohamed, these reading nights are held at the Tranzac from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of every month from April to September.

JOURNALERS UNITE

Journalers unite: Are you looking to invest in a fountain pen? Or need a dozen stickers to add to your planner? Then the Toronto Stationery Show is perfect for you. On April 25, head over to Parkdale Hall to enjoy 60+ exhibitors, including local artists. Entry is free, and the event goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so you have plenty of time to browse every stall.

ZINESTERS' SUPPORT GROUP

Zinesters’ support group: Got an unfinished zine or two lying around? Then head down to Secret Planet Print Shop’s zine club event on April 30. With a PWYC or $5 cash donation, yap and zine out from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. alongside other zinesters who get it.

Also note that April 25 is Canadian Indie Bookstore Day! Celebrate independent bookstores by dropping by this Saturday. Places like Type, Queen Books, Another Story or Glad Day have announced programming that includes giveaways, book swaps, author chats and more. If you’re lucky, your neighbourhood might be organizing an indie bookstore crawl, so keep your eyes peeled on their socials to join in on the fun and make it a day by bringing your bookish friends along for the ride.
