So, it’s lunch time and all of a sudden, you hear the beat of Arabic percussions and start salivating at the idea of warm saj bread.
Taco Bell and shawarma are the two things that pulled me through my last semester of my Master’s degree. So, if you’re in the University of Toronto area and need a good shawarma to remind you life is worth living, here are a few options for your next lunch break.
The Salad House
This place sounds like it shouldn’t be a shawarma spot, but it’s probably one of the most authentic places on the list. It’s located at 17 Hayden St.
As soon as you walk in, the staff is yelling at you (in a friendly way) to get your order in. They ask you for your toppings and scream out your initials once it’s ready.
But this crazy customer service tells you the food is going to be good — and it is. It’s probably one of the best shawarmas I’ve had in the city. I went with my brother and we both agreed that you had to fight for your life to order, but that it’s worth it.
It’s a 10-minute walk from UofT campus and pretty close to both Queen’s Park and Yorkville if you work around there.
Dasimar Shawarma
This spot offers yummy Syrian-style shawarma. It’s got everything from wraps to plates to family platters. You can find this spot at 673 Yonge St. and it’s about an eight-minute walk from UofT’s St. George campus.
I remember the day I noticed this spot on Uber Eats. I thanked the heavens, because I was getting sick of eating the same shawarma every single day and I refused to have Shelby’s overpriced meals.
It’s authentic, tasty and the chicken is cooked perfectly every single time.
Majestic Shawarma
If you’re looking for a cheap shawarma place near campus, check out this spot located at 750 Spadina Ave.
It serves full saj plates that come with rice, fries or salad for around $13.
It’s a six-minute walk from UofT campus, pretty yummy and has a 4.8-star rating and over 1,260 reviews.
Shawarma Q
This place is literally only a two-minute walk from campus. It’s located at 987 Bay St. and has nearly 800 reviews.
It currently has 4.4 stars and offers burgers, wraps, plates, salads and even Turkish-style pizza.
I haven’t tried this place yet, but I see it on my walks all the time. If you do end up trying it, let me know if it’s bad and I’ll remove it off the list — just kidding, I won’t.
Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill
Listen, I have to put an Iraqi spot on this list. They just do it better than everyone else…I’m not biased, I swear.
This is yet another spot that has gotten absolutely viral. It’s a slightly further walk away, but it’s so worth it. Located at 467 Queen St. W., this spot is about 19-minutes away from campus.
It’s absolutely delicious and worth every single penny.
