Why you need to add Kalisway to your Toronto playlist

If a small venue is hosting an artist I enjoy — I’m there.

Which is what led me and my sister to The Mod Club last month for our latest obsession. If you aren’t already hip to Naomi Scott, then you’re missing out. I knew I’d love the show immediately, I’m a big fan of most Janet Jackson-indebted musicians, and I had been obsessively listening to her debut album all year. But I was wonderfully surprised by the talent of the opener, Kalisway.

Born and raised in Toronto, Kalisway was a complete delight to see in the flesh. I’d listened to some of her songs beforehand and immediately recognized her once she stepped on the stage, but it wasn’t until she began her performance that I was totally hooked.

Though classified as an alternative R&B and funk artist, I’d describe her more as a summer music aficionado. Kalisway’s songs range from modernized jack swing-ish tracks made for the electric slide at a BBQ to funky “I’m the shit” type songs meant to be shouted in your car driving down the 401. Not to mention her syrupy sweet vocals sound even better live, no autotune or pitch correction, it’s all natural and completely Kalisway.

And it sealed the deal when she noted in between songs that she produces her music. Any woman who self-produces is after my heart, but to also have bangers in the catalogue and the energy to turn a crowd of strangers into fans within minutes? It was a done deal for me.

My personal favourite is her track “Like That” that had the audience on their feet within seconds of the beat starting.

If you get the chance to see her live, whether or not you’ve heard of her, definitely make the trek.
