A long-awaited debut

A long-awaited debut: Multidisciplinary artist Diana Reyes, best known as DJ My Lady Di, never got her debut, so she’s taking matters into her own hands. In the Philippines, a young woman’s 18th birthday marks her “debut,” a celebration welcoming her to adulthood. Since Reyes’ never had the chance to have her own, she’s hosting her own on Aug. 29 in Scarborough and going all out. Enjoy hilarious stand-up, dazzling dance performances and banging DJ sets by Filipino talent from 6 to 8 p.m. Make sure to nab a seat to the show for $33.59 and a chance to enter the karaoke raffle before tickets sell out.

Queer skate jam

Queer skate jam: Whether you’re new to skateboarding or a vet, all queers looking to find community on wheels are welcome to join Queer Skate Toronto for their free August event. On Aug. 29, meet fellow queer and trans skaters at Ashebridges skatepark from 4 to 8 p.m. There’ll be mini contests, lessons for newbies, free refreshments and more.

All-day storytelling festival

All-day storytelling festival: Join Danu Social House this Saturday, Aug. 29 for a day filled with dedicated storytelling fun. From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., drop by for Telling Spree, where artists will host workshops and performances around the art of storytelling. Whether that be through movement of the body or the remixing and retelling of old stories, all that and more to be experienced. Check out their site for descriptions of the workshops and performances and details on signing up if you want to save a seat. All tickets are PWYC to cover venue fees.

Outdoors overdose education and artmaking

Outdoors overdose education and artmaking: In honour of International Overdose Awareness Day, Harm Reduction Advocacy Collective is hosting “Woven Memories” on Aug. 30. Join the collective at Trinity Bellwoods Park’s “We Miss You Still” installation for an afternoon spent decorating naloxone kits, OD response training, discussion and a call for collaborators for an upcoming memorial quilt and more.
