Here are some cool events worth going solo to this week.

Tomato festival

Tomato festival: Another tomato-themed event has hit the city! Head down to Evergreen Brick Works for an afternoon of tomato fun. Try locally grown heirloom tomatoes, make tomato-themed art, eat a bunch of tomato-based dishes and more at Tomato-palooza, going from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. You can even help crown this year’s tomato champion by paying a small fee to taste samples and vote for your favourite.

Outdoor zine swap

Outdoor zine swap: Connect and swap with your favourite zinesters at Christie Pitts. From 12 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 23, Zine Dump is hosting their inaugural zine swap event to get rid of overstock or simply build up your collection. Attendees are also welcome to donate $5 or PWYC to help support the upcoming Zine Dump fair this November.

Queer horror trivia night

Queer horror trivia night: Help a queer indie short film see the light of day with this queer and horror movie-themed trivia night on Aug. 24. At Three Dollar Bill, join Footnotes Studio and fellow horror cinephiles for a night of themed trivia, with prizes and a raffle to top it all off from 7:30 p.m. ‘till late. All tickets are PWYC with full proceeds going to complete the short.

Back to school salon

Back to school salon: Rapper Sydanie’s brainchild, The MOCHA (Mothers Organized in Community Healing and Art) Project, is hosting another reading room event on Aug. 27, in time for the upcoming school season. From 5 to 9 p.m., celebrate Black joy and freedom through a panel discussion, youth open mic and BBQ. For those in kindergarten to grade 12, free braiding appointments will be offered along with backpacks. RSVP for you, family or community members at UrbanArts’ Mount Dennis location.
