Where to learn how to paint for cheap in Toronto

Muktaara asked where to learn how to paint for free or at an affordable price.

Here are a couple of places to learn how to paint affordably or for free. Of course, I’ll always recommend looking at what the City of Toronto has to offer. Their fall programming isn’t available yet, but it is usually much more affordable than art classes offered at other places.

Painting on a budget

If you’re looking for weekly beginner classes under $30 per hour (before taxes), there’s:

• Mangled Studios for $23/hour (six classes, two-hour sessions twice a week, full price is $275). They also offer drop-in sessions for $18 if you bring your own supplies or $32.50 to $35 if you want acrylic, oil or watercolour paint.
• Blank Canvases for $25/hour (eight classes, two-hour sessions, full price is $395.00).
• Create Art Studio: for $28/hour (six classes, one and a half hour sessions, full price is $259).
• And if you’re into online or in-person tutoring, Superprof has a range of painting instructors, some offering free first classes.

One-time classes

And if you’re looking for something more low-stakes, then check out M Falconer’s paint series at her studio in Regent Park. They go slightly cheaper than most paint nights, from $23-43 for a ticket, depending on the event.

If you want to get your Bob Ross on, The Junction’s Say Hey House has an upcoming Ross-style paint night on Aug. 23, 2026, with two different time blocks, one at 2:30 p.m. and the other at 5 p.m.

For the architecture nerds out there, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario hosts a drop-in paint-by-numbers event and tour every Sunday this summer. Just sign up on Eventbrite or their site beforehand and show up at the historical landmark (111 Wellesley Street West) with time to spare.
