In our parliamentary system, we’re not voting for the prime minister, but rather the person we want to represent us in Parliament.

The party with the most members of parliament (MPs) after the election gets the first chance to form a government — and remains the government — as long as they retain the confidence of the House of Commons.

In some cases, your local candidate may have a different stance than the party leader on an issue. For this reason, it’s worth contacting your local campaign to find out where your local candidate stands on a platform promise you care about — and whether or not you find their promise credible.
