This video was produced by a youth journalist who participated in The Green Line's Alexandra Park Youth Journalism program in partnership with Scadding Court Community Centre. It's part of the series "Know Your Neighbour," which profiles the people and places important to community members in Alexandra Park, Kensington Market and Chinatown.

On the western end of Market 707, just outside of Scadding Court Community Centre, sits a small yet mighty family-run eatery called Little Banh Mi Shop.

Operated by Hung Ta, his wife and daughter, the compact stall serves Banh Mi sandwiches and rolls to regulars from Alexandra Park, workers from Toronto Western Hospital and visitors coming to the market from all corners of the city.

Ta says the market attracts a diverse clientele and brings attention to a neighbourhood that would otherwise be under the radar.

Ta says he and his family have always liked to be entrepreneurial and open their own open. The selling point for starting a restaurant in Market 707 was that entrepreneurs can start their business at a much lower cost than most other retail spaces, benefit from a receptive and established community, and actually make a living from their hard work.

Ta has worked in family businesses before, but he says this time around, the experience has been much more enjoyable and personable.

“It’s not just a business where you come and go," he explains. "You’re actually interacting with people, getting to know them.”
